I woke up ten minutes ago thinking about what makes a trading card game fun. There's the suspense of opening a new pack, which is fun because of the tension of wondering what you'll get and the discovery of new cards to add to your decks. Then there's coustomization. Sure, some company you may never have heard of produces the actual cards, but it's the player who makes something out of them, creating a deck that reflects exactly how they want to play. I'm actually not certain this qualifies as a space opera, being set primarily on earth and about humans with aliens only even showing up in the second act, but it sounds cooler this way. The original premise was, "What if the Skrull got their stuff together and invaded properly, taking into account the threat posed by the normal military, and just carpet bombed the place?" A weapon of that size is expensive, and you must be able to justify the cost. In a society that arrived at that technology the standard way (as is almost always the case for settings where these robots proliferate) they would know that a bigger tank would be better on the ground and virtually anything would be better in the sky. They're just so damn elaborate, do you understand the amount of computing power and dexterity it takes you just to walk across a room? I don't have time to explain, but it's pretty bloody imp
